A Deputy serves under a designated regional Sheriff, participating in the posse comitatus tradition of distributed peace-keeping. A Deputy is a peer in the peace-line — not a subordinate in the statutory-hierarchy sense — though a Deputy operates within the designation and direction of the Sheriff to whom the Deputy is sworn.

L’adjoint sert sous l’autorité d’un shérif régional désigné, participant à la tradition du posse comitatus de maintien distribué de la paix. Any Heir holding ligeantia naturalis, willing to stand in full personal liability, willing to take the Oath of Allegiance, and having connection to the region under the relevant Sheriff's designation may be deputised.

A Deputy may be deputised by more than one Sheriff where jurisdictional overlap or mutual assistance so requires. Cross-deputisation is recorded in the common-law register and operates without statutory approval, consistent with the reception of the posse comitatus tradition.

A Deputy assists in the keeping of the Sovereign's peace, the execution of process in the common-law register, the witnessing and recording of common-law acts, and such other duties as the Sheriff may direct. As with the Sheriff's own role, the Deputy's work today is primarily documentary and witnessing — peace kept by presence, witness, and record.
